Creating softer light in clubs

Shooting in Night clubs is a hobby of mine, I do it in my evenings for Tilllate.com in Manchester, UK. All the photo reports I've ever made are here.

I'm always on the search for new techniques & at www.ambrel.net i've found a few and thought i'd share all I can find about this pretty unique sport of Low Light Photography.

Here in the mirror we can clearly see his setup is a Big Bounce (LQ-881D) which stops the hard light spot in the middle of the light called a hard specular highlight and allows for a softer skin tone. He's taken it off camera to create shadows and stop the flat look of on-camera-flash. He'll be using infra red to fire the stobe or the flash from the main camera to fire the slave.

Most photographers think diffusers make for softer shadows this is untrue, larger light sources will do that diffusers mearly increase the angle or coverage.

Small light = Hard Light/Shadows
Large Light = Soft Light/Shadows

Yes it is possible to bounce light in a white room but lets face it there are none in Night Clubs and Event Photography.

So to make a better quality of light Ambrel has used the lumiquest to increase the size by reflection on the white surface. If you want to learn more about lighting and how to make soft/hard light go to see the strobist
